Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican Americans living in the U.S. and in Canada. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased, and visiting gravesites with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl.
Honoring the food traditions of Day of the Dead, we will have moles including a vegetarian mole negro and a mole roja made with New Mexico red chile, tortillas, rice, a salad, an autumn Mexican soup, agua frescas, and sweets and cookies, from Santa Fe chefs Kim Müller, Michelle Roetzer, Tanya Story, Fernando Olea and other great volunteer cooks.
Children's activity table to do paper cut-outs and decorate sugar skulls.
Mexican chocolate elixirs by Santa Fe chocolateer Mark Sciscenti will be sold separately.
